We Were the Future

SONG OF THE MONTH/MAY 2016

May 10, 2016

A song inspired by sitting on a summer patio on College Street in Toronto. No doubt more than a few relationships have started (and ended) there.

Madame X.

Walking across College
secure in the knowledge
I am only passing this way once.
Thinking about my woman
and the feeling keeps on coming.

Watching all the faces
of the places I can’t go.
No regrets, only a sense of wonder.
Dreaming in their perfumed wake
and still the feeling I just can’t shake…

…that all I want to do is mmmmm…
…and all I want to is do is mmmmm…

Madame X., we haven’t met
but I bet we would get along.
You would share your secrets
and the wine would keep on flowing –

– until we realized
there was nothing left to say,
only that it’s time to be going.
Following in your liquid wake,
always the thought that I can’t shake…

…that all I want to do is mmmmm…
…and all I want to is do is mmmmm…

Quiet men in sunny doorways.
Women’s hips turn gentle corners.
Everything is felt and nothing’s said.
Out here on this summer street
I’m half awake and half asleep
and always there’s this song inside my head.

…and all I want to do is mmmmm…
…and all I want to do is mmmmm…
…and all I want to do is mmmmm…
…and all I want to do is mmmmm…
